Queensland Fertility Group is the Australian leader in egg freezing. We currently have 7 babies born from frozen eggs – more than any other clinic in Australia. Egg freezing can be likened to a ‘reproductive insurance policy’ which may or may never be claimed. Women can make the decision to freeze their eggs at a younger age and be assured that these eggs will be available to use later, when the time is right for them to have their family.
Three main groups of women seek this specialty reproductive service.
- The first are women who require cancer treatment and with early diagnosis are choosing to undergo IVF and freeze the eggs for future use.
- The second group are couples who for religious or ethical reasons oppose the freezing of embryos. These couples are more comfortable with the freezing of eggs and choose this treatment.
- The final group are single women who have not yet met their life partner are concerned about their future fertility. These women are aware that fertility declines with maternal age and are specifically choosing to undergo IVF and freeze their eggs for later use. This is a growing group and a reflection of our changing society.
Patients undertake an IVF treatment cycle where the ovaries are artificially stimulated with a course of injections to produce oocytes (eggs). These eggs are removed in a minor surgical procedure and then frozen before being stored. The treatment costs are equivalent to a full IVF cycle plus storage costs.
Our scientific results that were presented at the 2007 Fertility Society Association conference in Hobart showed a 70% post thaw survival rate, 60% fertilisation rate and a 30% pregnancy success rate from each batch of frozen eggs.
