For many couples minimally invasive and lower cost procedures such as timed conception and ovulation induction are a first line treatment to increase fertility. Some couples need a helping hand to identify ovulation in the month whilst others require ovulation induction with medication. Ovulation disorders are a common cause of infertility in women, accounting for 10 – 20% of cases that we see. They may manifest as having irregular periods or the total absence of periods. Other causes of irregular ovulation include thyroid disease, certain medications, rapid weight gain or loss and emotional stress. If you are not having regular periods between 24 and 32 days and are trying to conceive then you may wish to see an infertility specialist.

Ovulation problems are mostly treated with clomiphene citrate tablets, which are taken early in your cycle or Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) injections. These medications stimulate the ovaries to produce a mature oocyte. With these treatments your doctor will monitor your response to treatment with blood tests and ultrasound scans. To maximize your chance of conception either timed intercourse or intrauterine insemination (IUI) will be recommended. For many couples ovulation induction is their first experience with an infertility clinic.
