GIFT - Gamete Intra-Fallopian Transfer

GIFT procedure is similar to an IVF treatment cycle with ovarian stimulation, monitoring and oocyte collection. Oocyte "pick-up" is usually done by the laparoscopic method although the transvaginal ultrasound method is occasionally used. At this point IVF and GIFT procedures differ. With GIFT the two best-looking oocytes are transferred into the patient's fallopian tubes along with some of the husband's sperm. This is done with the aid of a laparoscope.

For GIFT to be considered as a treatment option at least one of the patient's fallopian tubes must be normal as should be the husband's semen. Some patients specifically choose this treatment as fertilisation and embryo development occurs in the normal physiological environment ie. the fallopian tubes, and therefore it is acceptable to some people for whom IVF is unacceptable.

1 in 6 couples will experience difficulties conceiving.
