Not All Infertility Treatment Is IVF
Ovulatory disorders account for approximately 10–20% of infertility problems, and for these couples IVF is not always the answer. Ovarian stimulation with either timed conception or insemination is usually the preferred first-line treatment.
The major causes of ovulatory disorders include Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCO), thyroid dysfunction, medications such as anti-depressants, rapid weight gain or weight loss and emotional stress. However, the largest factor affecting fertility in the women we see at Queensland Fertility Group is AGE, resulting in poor oocyte quality.
Initial investigations carried out by GP’s or fertility specialists include blood tests checking for elevated progesterone in the second half of the cycle, complete hormone screening including thyroid, LH and FSH and ultrasound scans to check ovarian structure and function.
Fallopian tube patency and semen analysis is also always checked as part of any initial infertility investigation.
Treatment options depend on the cause of the disorder and include Chlomiphene (Clomid) or FSH stimulation for PCO patients and addressing nutrition with patients experiencing weight fluctuation. Donor eggs may be used as a last resort, for women with very poor ovarian function.
Patients can expect a 12%–15% success rate with ovulation induction and the greatest success in the first three cycles.
