Optimising The Potential Of Sperm
50% of the cases presenting at QFG are related to problems with sperm or sperm production and as a result the rate of ICSI with IVF is increasing. The good news is that men can optimise their sperm quality through lifestyle choices thereby increasing their chances of natural conception and maximising the chances of success from assisted reproduction treatments.
QFG’s tips for healthy sperm
- Eat food rich in antioxidants such as berries, pumpkin seeds, colourful vegetables and green tea and consider a multivitamin supplement with high levels of antioxidants such as Vitamins C & E. Antioxidants protect sperm from free radical damage which can occur during storage in the testes.
- Keep the testes cool as sperm do not like high temperatures. Wear boxer underpants rather than briefs, avoid tight jeans, have showers rather than hot baths and saunas. If your occupation has you seated for long periods get up and move around on a regular basis.
- Have frequent sex. Regular ejaculation ensures that sperm are fresh and strong and free from damage that can occur during prolonged storage in the epididymis.
- Lose weight. Obesity can disrupt sex hormone production and subsequent semen quality.
- Avoid cigarette smoking, recreational drugs, anabolic steroid drugs, sexual lubricants and limit alcohol intake. These can reduce reduce sperm quality, effect sperm motility and cause sperm DNA damage.
- Know your medications. Treatments for cancer, infl ammatory bowel disorders, blood pressure medications and immune system suppressants can reduce sperm quality and damage production.
- Avoid naturopathic products that have components with an oestrogenic action. They suppress sperm production.
