Endometrial scratch in IVF

New research published today in The New England Journal of Medicine from New Zealand researchers now shows conclusively that carrying out an endometrial biopsy, called an “endometrial scratch”, in the month prior to an embryo transfer does not increase the chance of an embryo implanting. This is an important development as previous research had provided weak evidence suggesting that there may have been a benefit. However, although it is now clear that there is no therapeutic benefit from this procedure, there are still some circumstances, where an endometrial biopsy can provide useful diagnostic information.

As in all areas where the available evidence is uncertain, our individual doctors exercise responsible clinical judgement when individualising care of their patients. We regard it as a medical responsibility, when considering alternative approaches, to explain to our patients, the level of evidence that supports that approach.
