Artificial Insemination - IUI

What is IUI?

Artificial Insemination, or Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), is a simpler and more affordable starting point for fertility treatment, which is often recommended before considering IVF.

If you or your partner has been diagnosed with unexplained infertility, hostile cervical mucus, minor sperm abnormalities or other male fertility issues, IUI may increase your chances of conception. It can also be used in cases where semen has been frozen – due to a male partner's absence during the critical time in a woman’s cycle (if he is away for work), or before chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

What is the IUI process?

IUI involves inserting the male partner’s (or donor’s) prepared sperm through the neck of the womb (cervix) and into the uterus, close to the time of ovulation. It is not a painful or invasive procedure, in fact it’s very much like having a pap smear. You may experience mild short-term cramps, but you should be able to return to work straight away.

It can be performed during a natural cycle (i.e. medication free) or with Ovulation Induction (OI).

Artificial insemination with donor sperm

IUI is also a treatment option for women or couples who are using donor sperm.

Donor sperm may be recommended when the male partner has problems with sperm quality or production, or if there is a high risk of passing on a genetic condition. IUI using donor sperm is also an option for single women or same sex couples who want to create a family.

What does IUI treatment cost?

IUI is a relatively low cost fertility treatment option. Please call 1800 111 483 or complete the form below for current costs of IUI treatment in your local area.
