Dale Goss, Clinical Embryologist at IVFAustralia, shares a pioneering AI sperm selection study presented at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) 2025.

"In July, I was honoured to present at ESHRE 2025 conference in Paris - the largest and most prestigious IVF conference in the world, attracting leading experts from the medical, scientific and nursing professions.

I was selected to present findings to a large group of spectators from the first clinical study of SpermSearchAI - an artificial intelligence tool developed in collaboration with Virtus Health to assist embryologists identify sperm in the most severe cases of male infertility. This is designed for patients where sperm retrieval is especially challenging, often requiring extended searches taking hours in surgically extracted testicular tissue or rare sperm semen.

This Australian study, conducted in collaboration with Virtus Health and NeoGenix Biosciences under early access approval, demonstrated that SpermSearchAI reduced sperm search times by up to 75%. This allowed embryologists to screen more samples within a fixed time frame, increasing the total number of sperm identified and improving the chance of offering patients their own biological children.

35 couples have been treated with the assistance of SpermSearchAI, resulting in five pregnancies and one live birth so far, an encouraging outcome in a cohort typically considered extremely difficult to treat by conventional means.

After my presentation, I received expert feedback on our findings from global key opinion leaders, which was invaluable for refining future study designs and integration of this technology in clinical protocols.

Conferences like these allow networking with like-minded colleagues, reinforcing the collaborative spirit that drives progress in IVF to better serve our patients."
