The science behind our high success rates
Queensland Fertility Group has pioneered many assisted reproductive technologies and treatments in Australia, including surgical sperm retrieval and advanced sperm diagnostics. The Queensland Fertility Group science team includes over 30 scientists working in our clinical laboratories (embryology and andrology).
Virtus Diagnostics (a sister practise of QFG) has over 25 scientists based in Queensland to perform diagnostic Pathology testing.
Queensland Fertility Group have in-house laboratories for embryology and andrology services throughout Queensland, so we can ensure our timing is optimised to maximise your chance of success. It also allows you to undergo almost all your treatments and testing in one convenient location.
Our specialist embryology laboratories are located in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns. They are all accredited by the Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee (RTAC) and operate seven days a week.
In the embryology laboratories we perform a full range of treatment services including:
Because semen samples need to be analysed within an hour of production, every clinic has a NATA accredited semen collection and diagnostic andrology laboratory. Advanced semen analysis such as surgical retrieval (TESA or MESA) and ICSI now give many couples the chance to have a baby where just 20 years ago it would have been impossible.
- Advanced diagnostics
Our central Brisbane laboratory also performs endocrinology, cytogenetics and DNA diagnostics. Our world-class genetic testing Pre-Implantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is also carried out here, and if Advanced Embryo Selection (AES) is required the biopsy will be specially transported to Melbourne. We believe chromosome screening of embryos will provide the next big breakthrough in boosting pregnancy and birth rates for our patients.
- Pioneering scientific expertise
Jacqui Irving is the Queensland Fertility Group (QFG) Scientific Director, and one of Australia’s leading fertility scientists having represented Australian and New Zealand scientists working in the field as a board member for the Fertility Society of Australia.
Jacqui obtained her science degree, with honours in biochemistry, at Bristol University in the UK, before going on to complete a Masters in Human Biology at Edith Cowan University in Perth, WA. After relocating from Perth to Brisbane in 2002, Jacqui began with QFG as an Embryologist, before moving into the role of Embryology Laboratory Manager, responsible for the management and education of a large team across four laboratories state-wide.
With a strong focus on research, Jacqui regularly presents at conferences both nationally and internationally, and has authored and co-authored numerous scientific articles. In her role as Scientific Director, Jacqui is committed to ensuring QFG continues to be an industry leader and utilises state-of-the-art technology and adopts the latest advances in assisted reproduction techniques and treatments.
Dr Nicole Martin is the Chief Scientist, Queensland Fertility Group Genetics and has been in this position since 2003. Nicole has over 34 years’ experience in scientific leadership roles within the genetics field.
The laboratory Nicole oversees at QFG is an integrated laboratory that undertakes both Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics diagnostic work. The Cytogenetic testing encompasses infertility karyotype screening as well as prenatal and miscarriage analysis and is the only laboratory in Australia to offer sperm FISH for aneuploidy screening and translocation meiotic segregation assessment. The Molecular laboratory is one of the largest CF screening laboratories in Australia and also performs Mendelian gene PGD and prenatal diagnosis, including UPD studies.
Nicole has taught at the undergraduate level in the biological sciences and also teaches Medical students in their final year at The University of Queensland. She has over 30 publications in peer reviewed journals covering infertility, paediatric cytogenetic and genetic cases as well as prenatal diagnosis.
QFG scientists work collaboratively with Melbourne IVF and IVF Australia's scientific teams to develop best practices and cutting edge research. Together, they ensure that Queensland Fertility Group continues to apply the latest advances in treatment technology to give you the best possible chance of having a baby.
