New findings confirm IVF does not increase risk of breast cancer

Findings of a long term study following 25,000 women has shown that undergoing IVF is not linked to an increased risk of breast cancer.

The study explored whether ovarian stimulation during IVF could be linked to a higher risk of breast cancer. Women who began IVF treatment between 1983 – 1999, or who underwent other forms of fertility treatment during 1980 – 1995 were contacted, and followed up in 2013 to ascertain cancer incidence rates.

The study’s findings, published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, found that the risk of breast cancer in women who had had IVF treatment was not substantially different to the risk within the non-IVF group, or to that of the general population.
