We suggest booking these two simple tests to help you gain valuable information about your fertility, to check where you stand. Simply request a GP referral for the following tests, which can be arranged through your Queensland Fertility Group clinic.

1. Book a semen analysis  

With male fertility factors accounting for 40% of the cause of pregnancy delay, it makes sense to book a semen analysis once you’re ready to start trying. Luckily, this male fertility test is quite easy for you or your partner to check off the list and can provide you with invaluable insight into your chances of conceiving.

2. Book an AMH test 

If you want to understand your ovarian reserve levels compared to other women of the same age, an AMH test is for you. Although this female fertility test doesn’t give any information on the quality of your eggs, it will provide insight into the remaining quantity of eggs and number of fertile years.

In 40% of couples the cause of infertility is attributed to a sperm factor, in another 40% the cause is found within the female reproductive system, and a third will have a combination of male and female factors.   

Tests like the AMH and a semen analysis provide a baseline in order to rule out the most common fertility factors that contribute to pregnancy delay. This way, you can receive expert advice from the very start of your journey.

The general rule of thumb is if you're under 35 and have been trying for 12 months, we recommend seeking help from your GP or a fertility specialist. For those over 35, seek help after 6 months of trying.  

However, if you have known gynaecological issues, irregular periods, or any other medical history that could impact your fertility, we suggest seeing a fertility specialist sooner rather than later to get the appropriate advice for your situation. Trust your instincts; don't hesitate to reach out sooner if you're worried. 

As part of your initial consultation, your fertility specialist will take a full medical history with special attention to your menstrual history, timing of intercourse, any sexual issues and previous pregnancy history, and results from any previous fertility tests.

They will then arrange any other recommended tests prior to setting up a follow up consultation to review the results. From there, you’ll be able to work together on a plan to pregnancy alongside their expert advice.

The out-of-pocket cost of your first appointment can range between $200 and $350, depending on the specialist.  You’ll need to arrange a doctor’s referral from a GP (valid for 12 months) or specialist (valid for three months), with both you and your partner’s name on the referral, if applicable. This will also ensure you are eligible for Medicare rebates.
